WINERY Hannes Sabathi
In the middle of the Southern Styrian wine country, high on the Kranachberg in Gamlitz, lies the winery of Hannes Sabathi. Since 1860, the farm has been family owned. For a long time a mixed agriculture was operated on it and only Hannes’ father Otto put the focus on the viticulture, in order to supply the in-house tavern with wine. Hannes Sabathi grew up on this farm and since early childhood he wanted to make special wines. After completing his training at the Silberberg wine school, his parents handed over the entire business to him in 2005, which of course brought many changes.
Today, Hannes manages 30 hectares in southern Styria and 4.5 hectares at Grazer Kehlberg. Today, it is important to him to bring the origin character of his wines as true to the original as possible in the bottle. His goal – “I want to make wines that speak even in 30 years, a clear language and its philosophy is recognizable.”
The charismatic winemaker is known for his authentic, earth-bound wines, which may have rough edges, but those radiate more personality in them he believes. Hannes Sabathi is convinced that the quality and character of wines are in the soil. Each year, the challenge and art is to find the ideal synthesis of soil character and variety typicity and to put it in the bottle. For example, in the Sauvignon Blanc “Kranachberg”, one can find the fine, salty minerality of the gravel soils and in the Pinot blanc “Jägerberg”, the austere minerality, as well as the warm note of the calcareous clay soil can be enjoyed.
Hannes likes to travel to Burgundy quite often, because he loves the full character wines that can be found there. The uniqueness of the wines and the experience of the winemakers impress him very much, as he finds how the winegrowers consciously deal with nature.
They have an unremitting commitment to quality and those are not influenced by market trends under any circumstances. This is exactly his goal in Styria!
